Vinyard Bulldog

Oil on canvas panel, 12" by 12"--This is a 1940 Ford COE (cab over engine) truck, fully restored with a 1942 grill. These were popular trucks and the precursors of the modern10 wheeler tractors. This had an 85 hp flathead V8 engine. These trucks could have a very short wheelbase and were configured for 1 1/2 to 2 tons of cargo. This truck is at the Thomas Fogarty vineyard in Portola Springs, California. The short snout on the trucks gives the appearance of a pug or bulldog face (to me, that is). My plein air painting of this was done when it was foggy and served as a reference along with some photos taken when the fog had cleared. Getting those grays just the right hue was a bit of a challenge.

Yeah the solar panels were kind of funky, but I did see them as color shapes that brought the eye right to the truck. My plein air painting of the truck was very flat, because it was overcast when I painted it, but I had some good photos with the sun out and decided to paint it better in the studio!!

The truck is great and I also noticed the dark trees etc keeping us in the painting with the solar panels brings us right to the truck. The truck looks dimensional ! I imagine that you liked to draw trucks and cars when a little lad !
