Now I see your reference photograph, I see that you were right. It's not the colour at all. It is the photo that curves, which is what makes the perspective different and interetsting. It was shot with a very wide lens, which has distorted the scene. In the photograph the curve of the lens makes the sea appear to fall inwards. You were accurate in your painting. Well done. :-)
Thank you all! The photo image had the water darker there as if in the shade of the rocks; I liked the richness of the blue in the reference photo so I left it in. I didn't paint the rocks exactly like the photo; changed the just a little bit and added a couple. I will upload the photo in a bit.
Welcome, Pandalana. I agree with Lori, the perspective is intriguing. Nicely painted, too.
The water coming up to the rocks might be a bit too dark, as the water seems to fall inwards at that point.
