Planning a painting and trying to work out the composition and values..im seeing this as a diagonal cross --not sure if this can be seen as a ess? the light on the dunes is my focal point.

I understand.  About the fence, the important thing about the fence is the taller of the posts .. they provide a nice vertical element that connects the foreground to the background through overlapping.  They also will provide you with a good opportunity for counter - change .. like you did on those fence posts on the right in the above study .. that is good!! ... be sure to keep that kind of stuff.  As I said before, your painting will be high key and your colors will mostly be pastel like .. except for the dark accents.  You might want to go on the internet and look up .. Brian Blood and his wife Laura Kersey ...they both paint a lot of dune paintings .. they live on the coast... you might want to check out their websites to get some ideas.  I cannot wait to see this painting completed, Lori!!! ..

Nooooo it's not the art you're hearing...just having a day:( ...the drawing will help! I'm thrilled to get your help-- you're very generous with your knowledge!

I think it is a nice design element .. gives rhythm.  But it would need to be designed ... not so neat looking .. and yes, leave an opening to get through.  I still think 5 is good ... with some tweaking with the items you mentioned.  Pull some ideas from your other sketches ... each one had good points.  You sound discouraged?  Please let me know if I am going overboard with to much info.  This is what I teach my class, btw.

Ok-- question. The photo reference has a fence that is intact-- do you think I should leave it that way? I thought I should open it up, but am wondering after reading your suggestion if that is a mistake?

Hi Lori.  I like 5 the best ... but be careful about those humps ... that is not what is happening in the photo reference ... study the reference carefully and analyze the linear movement of those beautiful lines in the foreground.  Also really see what is happening with the light in the foreground .. it relates so beautifully with this movement .. you must capture that feeling of movement both linear and light.  D o some more thumbnails but concentrate more on line, shapes, patterns, and movement through your foreground.  Try to think patterns and shapes ...not sand dunes.  I am seeing some beautiful shapes and patterns with those foreground shadows ... positive and negative.  The fence is providing very interesting rhythm patterns, and the diagonal direction .. moves you into the painting ... all these ideas must be emphasized.  I would like you to do a line sketch .. just contour lines ... carefully drawing all those beautiful shapes in the foreground..... no humps.  Then do a pencil 4 value sketch ..relative values only! ... not the actual values..... dark, mid dark, mid light, and light ..that will be the white of your paper.  Post these.  Then you will use black and white paint to paint a study ... but this time do actual values.  Post it.  Then you will be ready for the painting.

Ok...I think I need thumbnail practice! while I like the 2:1 ratio in #s 4 & 5 , #2 is not bad..I'm not keen on the water line in #2 though...Of the 5, I'd say #4 is interesting in that there's a circular movement through the drawing, from the lower right dune clockwise...I tried changing the perspective a bit by making the focal dune larger & blocking the waters edge on that side in #5 - but I'm thinking it has lost balance with the right side left too barren-- though I could create interest with sky reflections on the right. I do like having the dune rise above the water line --HELP!! lol
