Sandra, I also photograph my paintings in natutal light in the shade.  I try and do it on an overcast day between 10 am and 2 pm.   Sometimes I have some glare.  I will photograph my paintings  before oiling out or varnishing.   I think you did the right thing by underexposing it.  I just use a point and shoot camera.   The higher end DSLR cameras allow shooting in "raw" mode and you can adjust these images to a gray card.  I just put some white paper under one edge of the painting and lay the painting on a gray background (weathered redwood deck) and allow a lot of the background to show around the painting and crop it after color adjusting.   I have Photoshop Elements 11 but I usually use an old program from Microsoft "Digital Image Pro" for my editing.   Your photo looks pretty good to me with a lot of really nice grays.  Stu

Very nice stormy sky with minimal lighting.

Thank you, Stuart. Speaking of chroma, I had trouble photographing this one. I kept getting an over exposed image and higher chroma than it actually was. I think because this is such a dark painting. When I tried to correct it in I photo, it made it even more chromatic. I finally got closer using my camera setting to under expose it, but it is still more chromatic than the actual painting. Any suggestions? I take my images in natural light in the shade and often have a problem with glare, especially if I have used walnut oil. I have not mastered photo shop.

Nice work Sandra. You captured the stormy look very well; I can't see any lightening, but I can hear the thunder. Just about everyone else who has painted a dark sky has put way too much chroma in the water (and this was a lesson about grays!). I really like the patterns in the water. Stu
