Karlo, I missed this when you first posted.  You did a nice job on this.  Your light in the sky makes the blue water totally believable, because that and the direct sunlight on the beach shows that this is just a fog bank in the distance and not a stormy sky.  This is how the California coast looks this time of year.  Nice going, you nailed this one.  For Sharon Casavant: you can glue canvas to hardboard, plywood or gatorfoam with the glues that Karlo mentions or with acrylic soft body gel.   All of these are acid free and will work well.  My blog explains how you make textured panels with no canvas.   Stu

Thanks for your time in explaining the whats and hows... I know that the glue has to be acid free.  I will try this sometime soon.

Can't wait to get started on my painting probably tmw, friday before it is too late!

I used already glued canvas on board (i think it is even not a board but some hard paper..the cheepest one that I bought in local store - made in china, that is why i primed with gesso once more...), but i am sure - you can find even better in your store, or just use massonite primed with gesso.

Otherwise Kevin D. Machperson (in his book) suggest to make your own canvas boards, and he uses Gatorfoam (lighter then masonite), and for the glue he uses DemCo Neutral Bond Vinyl Adhesive bookbinding glue, but also : gesso, matte medium, Yes paste, miracle muck or Elmers glue, (i use glue for wood - white)..

I think Stu already wrote about how to prepare this panels...

hope this helps,

karlo

Thank you for letting me know what you painted on Karlo.  Well, it still came out excellent!  It's just that using gesso is time consuming for me, but pays off.

ps... what kind of glue can you use to attatch it to the masonite to make it last?

I'd love to get to this quality in two days work!

Hey Thanks Everybody ! It was not easy (like it looks when looking Richard), the ground was simple cotton canvas on masonite (I gessoed once more becouse it was not much preparation on it), (40x30cm - becouse I have some frames of this dimensions))

And i used oil colours with some Liquin as medium (dont find here walnut oil).

But could not get nice sky and rest from first atempt (you could see canvas thrue colors), so i made next day again some reinforcment, and was much better (as it was oil ground now..). That is why it look not so fresh like Richards (and becouse of my fiddling..). I tryed not to repaint to much darks..I would like to be able to make this "alla prima" like Richard, but for now not possible..

I love the light frothy part of the water and the light hitting the beach area.  What nice contrasts and colours.  Very well done!

may I ask what ground did you use to paint on?  It is very smooth... I want to get away from canvas.
