I love the light in this painting. Because I don't work off of photos, light is always the hardest thing for me to do. You do a great Bob Ross thing with the follage. I've never been able to figure out how to do that. He always made everything look so easy:) And you take risks with your color like the purples on the ground. Just love it. If I gave a color class I'd just say here are your colors, now mix them up and see what you come up with. I've never found mud in any combinations. It's all beautiful to me. But I must admit that I love the orange next to a purple/lavender. It just makes the orange pop out. I found that out when I did "Baby Rose". The videos are great, but I'm one of those artists that doesn't take classes on art on purpose. I do read a lot and I look at so much art. Where would we be without the internet? I went to a critique session at an art group last week and finally had to stand up and say my peace. So much negative imput. The man doing it was a realistic artist/teacher so anything slightly abstract he just didn't get. Even in the worse paintings there's always something good to say. Good thing I didn't take anything. He would have torn me apart, too:)) He didn't like me much when I was done, but artist's need encouragement not, as he put it, "this is a mess". That was cruel. I wanted to say, too, that I love your drawings. I did a lot of pen and ink years ago and really loved it. Your drawings are wonderful.

The color videos are fabulous. So much information. But I never want to do the work. I just want to paint. He's so damn cute, I'd like to take a class just to watch him paint:))) Don't tell my kids, they are older than he is. My oldest son lives in Perth, Australia so I sat in the terminal in Auckland last year for hours, but never got out to see it. Such a beautiful place to live.

Thanks Gregory, For over a year now I have been taking different color palettes and trying to paint a painting. I'm doing a color course and that is how I came to know about the YO, CRL, B & W in the other painting. I just commetted on that one on your page. Great fun trying all this new stuff! Ro

Joy, thank you for your encourabement for my painting. The book is wonderful and such fun. After reading it I went through all the painting sites on the internet looking for old masters works. I could see WHY they did what they did. It was quite exciting. My interest in compositiion is because of the statement, "The composition holds the interest of the viewer and leads the eye through out the painting." A bad composition is not interesting and can actually lead the eye out of the painting. Yikes! I also researched the author, Edgar Payne, to learn that his paintings are now selling for $300,000 to $500,000+. I figured he just might know something! You should be able to find the book for $50 or less. Watch out because I saw copies for much, much more. It is in print again. Ro

Thanks Lynda, this is my husbands favorite so we call it "his". I got a book for Christmas by Edgar Payne, "Composition of Outdoor Painting" (highly recommended to me). One of the fourteen different compositions mentioned (taught) in the book is called a steelyard. The large yellow tree is balanced by the smaller yellow tree in the background. Monet did this a lot.

This is my favourite Roena. How peaceful it feels - what do you mean by Steelyard composition?
