Lori, thank you so much for your thoughtful suggestion. I think the both side dark trees is the problem like Ann mentioned they are like a frame. Add some sky holes can improve it. I may try it.
Hi Silvana, thank you!
Super Laura!!!
Hi Xiao, Thank you for your nice word!
Very nice Laura. You are getting better and better.
Many thanks to Charles, Michael, Manneherrin, Susan for your comments, suggestions and encouragement! It is wonderful discussion. I kind of like the painting but with some uncertain regarding the composion. Now I learned from all of you. Thank you all so much!
The overall composition is well conceived and executed. The small tree does not detract because of the surrounding dark values. IF you wanted it to become less of a statement, you could soften the edges, lighten and vary the values (like you did on the ground surrounding the tree) and create some holes where the sky shows thru. Given it is a sunny day, the edges facing the sun would be lighter. I like the painting.
P.S. Me again. Laura, look back at Thomas W. sunset painting ..notice how the sky is EVERYTHING ...the land mass is nothing.
Hi Laura, Yes, I agree with everyone analysis and comments ...Laura, if your painting is going to be about clouds ..or a sky painting ....keep this in mind for future work ...keep your horizon low ...all that land mass is competing with your sky. Size relationships become important ...if you paint a sky painting (clouds) ..then paint the sky!!! ....make it the most important element in your painting ..make it OVERWHELMING!!! ..make NOTHING compete with it!! ....your large tree mass and your little tree are stealing the show ..that is what I mean about size relationship ....in a sky painting, make EVERYTHING smaller then the sky ...make the sky DOMINATE, DOMINATE, DOMINATE ..nothing else matters!!
