Oil 25 x 38cm.
Surprised myself by:
a. Doing another "sunset" painting (which I wouldn't normally do)
b. Getting it finished so quickly (one afternoon)
c. Being fairly happy with the result.

Thank you Jon and thank you Susan. Much appreciated.

I just read somewhere that paintings that are done quickly are quite often the best ones because they are fresh, expressive and tend not to be overworked. Your beautiful painting is a testament to that statement!

Very nice indeed!

Thanks Michael, well spotted! That has helped. All fixed - but here's what I did:

I knew I had made the far lamp posts a bit smaller than the near ones (they are shorter and narrower) but what I had really done wrong was to make the pier recede into the distance a little too much (at the bottom of the pier). So I touched up the pier a bit (it still recedes but not quite so much) and I also made the lights on the near lamp posts infinitesimally bigger (at their outer edges) and therefore slightly brighter. It seems to have done the trick.

I like getting your feedback, you're obviously very perceptive. With the diagonal shore line, the bulk of the "weight" of the water is to the right hand side so I placed the sun and its reflections a little left of centre in the hope of providing a calming balance. Again, well spotted, and again, thanks!

Very, very nice Lawrence.  :)  The lamp post, with the 2 lamps, at the far end of the pier is too similar in size to the first lamp pole.  It sounds like a small thing, but ...the fact that it is as tall and wide as the closest pole, destroys the nice illusion of receding distance that you have achieved with the pier.   It sets up an uneasy tension ...the best way I can explain it.  You would have a much better "feel" if you at least shortened the pole in height.  BTW, I like how you asymmetrically placed the setting sun!!! ..nice.

Thanks Cristina. Unfortunately the photo has come out rather dark and it's missing some of the lightness and subtleties in some of the colours. But I'm glad you like it.
