I have used a few types of oil painting paper pads - and never liked any of them.  I have also gessoed them & even then, haven't really liked using them, as they seemed too slippery.  I just bought a new small pad though, which is described as having a "linen structure" & I've used it twice - so far, I really like it & I didn't gesso it.  I also don't want to use canvas for small studies, so this is great.  (I use water soluble oils)

Beautiful work Lori ! The jar is just right with nice variety of light and shadow ! The gesso will help with the texture also so we don't see the paper texture

Nice work! Yes, I always prime the paper. Lately I bought a A3 Canvas Artist Pad which is primed paper. It is good for exercise but I do have to prime it as well, other ways I am not able to obtain a even wash as the thinner or the oil suncks into the paper. If I work with water mixable oil, and use water the paper buckles. But another layer or two of gesso makes a world of difference. Cheers, Ana

Thanks all for the kind words!! Linda-thx for the info-- I'll do that as well. I hate to use a canvas for practice.

if its in oil, it works better if paper is gessoed, Lori. I usually do a
whole bunch at a time. Nice painting.
