Hi Laurena!! You're off to a great start. Your water has such great movement...I can almost hear the swoosh!!! Nice sparkly light on your splashes as well!

Laurena, I am looking forward to seeing your revisions.  This painting is quite good ...as I said before ..you really nailed the movement of the water.  The few suggestions I made will just put the "icing on the cake".

Laurena,  see the blue green water at the top surface of my painting?, That is the color I am suggesting that you use for your top surface.

Okay, then I would like to suggest to you that you paint the top of the water ....try a cool blue/green.  Then ...where the water begins to cascade down ..paint a very  thick bead of warm white across the entire span.  Then ...very thinly ..and I mean just thinly scrub ...a cool dark rock color underpainting on the face of the cascade ...it is cascading for a reason ..there is a drop in elevation ..so you will see some of the rock underneath....anyway, after you have painted the underpainting,  take the color of your cascading water and paint downward strokes over the underpainting ..leave some of the rock exposed ..THEN....go up to that thick warm white bead of paint and PULL DOWN over the top of your water color.  Please do not overdo this ..it will look corny. At the very bottom of the cascade. show more dark rock or darker water color.   Now, since you told us that the log is spanning the gap ...paint a shadow underneath it! ..The shadow will angle somewhat like a "V" from left to right.  Okay, last thing ..other then what I had previously suggested ...darken your foreground water at the bottom there ...use UB plus Viridian, plus a little of your rock color.  I have a painting like this,  I will post it for you to take a look ..I will leave it up for a couple of days ..go ahead and print a copy of it ..if you like.

Thanks Michael and again thank your help.  I will work on your suggestions.

The water is cascading down a small waterfall and yes, on the photo I can see the top of the river.  The log is bridging the gap.

I’m always amazed how some painters like yourself your Richard can quickly see what is missing or needed!

Wow, I really feel the power and movement of the water Laurena!! ...This must have been an exciting place to sit and paint!!!  A couple of suggestions:  I would like to see the background trees darker and a more cool green.  Also, those background rocks ..make them much, much cooler ..also make sure you have green reflected light bouncing into them.  Where the background rocks meet the water, paint a strip of much darker/warmer color ..that is because the rocks are wet at the bottom.    Okay, now there is a confusing part ..is the water cascading down?  If this is a waterfall or cascade, can you see the top of the river?  Also, is that fallen log sitting in the water or is it bridging the gap?  Let me know the answers to those questions before I comment further.  :)))
