I think that Jon is correct here; linseed oil darkens and yellows with age and exposure to UV light reverses the process. This is why many color companies use safflower oil as an alternative for some of their whites; disadvantage is longer drying time and weaker paint film with most drying oils compared to linseed oil. If you want to have your oils dry faster, use an alkyd medium (Liquin, Galkyd, etc.). Stu

Re Michaels' comment "the hot sun will darken the oils in the painting", that's interesting, I thought I remembered reading somewhere that to "revive' the colors of oil paintings that have been inside for a long time, you should put them in the sun ... ? ...
