Acrylic on canvas 18 x 24
This is me being more realistic. I'm a little frazzled trying to get the rocks in focus without giving them too much attention.

Thanks Chris!  And...thanks for the friend request...you are my first friend here!  :)

You'd think someone who's spent most her life as a travel professional would remember the time change...LOL.  But, then, I do paint into the wee hours sometimes.  Maybe as technology gets better and better, there will one day be an "all nighter" live paint session.  :)  Or, if I'm lucky, I'll find a ticket to NZ and get to attend a real paint session.

Thanks Stuart for the info...and I enjoy your paintings as well!  Maybe I can catch the next seminar after the tree one is over.  I'm actually a ceramic major with no kiln.  So, I took up watercolors and pastels, then tried acrylics and enjoy the challenges of them all.  I stayed away from oils because I worried about the solvents giving me headaches.  Thank goodness for these new oils...I love them!  The blending aspect is blowing me away.  I think I'm addicted!  ;)

Debby, if you are interested in a live online painting lesson, go visit www.improvemypaintings.com.  Johannes Vloothuis from Hamilton, Ont., Canada has been doing this and is an exceptional instructor, quite similar to Richard.  The other person who has one going right now is Larry Seiler from Wisconsin.  Both of these guys are doing it through the Wet Canvas community.  Wet Canvas is sponsored by F&W Media (Northlight Books, the Artist's Magazine and Southwest Art publisher).  F&W also does Artist's Network TV, but this is streaming video and DVDs not live.  Johannes is your best bet in North America because he has been doing it for maybe 10 years.  Barb Sawyer, Vida Evenson, Hazel Perrson and I are all doing Johannes tree painting course right now.  You are going to love oils; they are really more versatile than acrylics.  I started in oils as a kid, changed to acrylics and only acrylics for about 30 years and came back to and have stuck with oils for over 10 years now.  You will have absolutely no trouble with oils; your work is excellent.  Stu

No I haven't because of the time differences to NZ, plus the technical difficulties last time I looked into it were a bit of an issue.

Thanks Richard.  As far as I can tell, everybody here is a potential winner because your instruction is exceptional.  :)  I just bought my first oil paints, and finally have time to tackle the lessons in your master class.  Already I know more than I did last week!  Have you ever held a “live” painting lesson via web/ video conferencing?

I was sorely tempted to make this the winner for the month Debby, so please know you were well in the running in my opinion. Fantastic colours. I can learn a thing or two from you I think.

Thanks Stuart, you are so right, the crits are so helpful!  Excellent suggestion Lynda about containing those rocks...I will try that. :)

Love this painting.  The colors are so alive!

I love vibrant colour Debby, so am a huge fan of this painting! I love the colours you've captured in the lower right corner of the river but felt the blues on the left side look just a tad too smooth or "air brushed" to feel like water. I see what you mean about the focus on the rocks but somehow, I think if you detail them any more, you'll lose that lovely element of secrecy/surprise/imagination/imperfection that keeps a painting interesting. Maybe just a little more clarity in the rocks at the edge of the painting to stop the eye from wandering off? Incredible painting! That grassy bank is just waiting to cushion a sun worshipper :-)
