after many months I'm getting back to painting..and remembering that one of the best things about it is the way I can forget everything and just think about the paint.
this is an 8x10 in progress - I wass drawn to the high contrast between dark and light - and have "lost" that in the painting - hoping I can find a way to capture it. As you can see in my sketch, I'm considering adding the two (really three if you count the stroller?) figures, with mom the focal point & child looking back the secondary..but now I'm not sure if I should add them. Also think my road is way too cool. I would appreciate comments/critiques/advice..

Can not wait to see the finished piece,is going to be wonderful!
Hi Lori, If you have painted your imprimatura, take a rag and begin to wipe out the light patterns ... that would be the sky, the figure, and the light on the road ...NOT THE SUNLIT GREENS ON THE TREES ..they are still part of dark pattern .. you will take care of that later. The imprimatura should be about value 5 or a little darker. When you wipe back the light patterns, the painting will immediately "tell" you what it wants next. Anyway, when you get that done, post that step and let us see it. BTW, what direction do you think the light is coming from??? .. I am thinking from the upper right and behind a little ... the shadows are coming from right to left?
Sounds interesting! (Hi, Lori ;D !)
Lori, take a new canvas and tone it with burnt sienna ... let it dry overnight. Do a few thumbnail notan drawings. This is a great photo ... it will make a very dramatic painting ... when your toned canvas is dry .. Let me know.
