Saghi,. I am not sure whether they are of sufficient quality yet but maybe you are right. I will do more and put extra thoughts into composition. Thanks for your encouragement!

Thanks Michael & Thomas!! I do think 'playing with paint' is important to understanding how it all works...so is drawing, composition...it is a lot to learn! I appreciate any and all advice:)

Lori, i think it is a very good idea to switch between the different assignments and not do dozens of the same in a row. I found the blockstudies much easier than the 7 shapes simplification and more fun. I had the feeling that i got nothing "nice" out of the simplification exercise and i streched the timeframe of the 100 studies. In the meantime it is getting better and do understand their purpose. Maybe not the best assignment to start with.

Hi Lori,  Your question was not addressed to me, but may I answer your question by saying ..yes ..do the block studies at the same time ...they do not need to be as elaborate as Thomas's were. Do Block studies under artificial and outdoor light both.  Do block studies with the block indoors by north light ..(find a window facing north) ..all this will give you the knowledge of how light effects the color ..a valuable lesson.

So all solid colored blocks..looking for ways to show levels of value & chroma? I will need to get busy!! I do find myself so frustrated when trying to paint - this may be one of the missing pieces. I've signed on to VAA but am only on the first lessons..and having a heck of a time trying to simplify what I see to 7 shapes!! I suspect I'll be working on that for a while ..does it make sense to do that at the same time as I paint block studies or did you find you went step by step? I appreciate your input!!

Lori, blockstudies are crucial and there seems to be no alternative to learn color. I wouldn't paint anything else before reaching 50. Barry Rayboulds (virtual art academy) recommends to do at least 200, better 400. simple ones with 3-5 blocks. One gets faster with practice and manages to do 3 or 4 a day. From the various types of studies i do, the effect of the blockstudies feels most obvious.

209!! I really do need to get that brush in hand MUCH more frequently!!  explains a lot!! I do like this, not only in terms of seeing the variation in color from one side of a block to another..but also in terms of composition..it's like a block city..actually there's a place in the US called Block Island..could e a good title for this!!

Silvana, thank you! This is my block study no. 209 and I tend to get faster ;-)
Michael, i still need to understand the difference between study and painting... Is there a difference?
Thanks a lot!
