Thanks Walda.  The answer is soft edges with lots of blending and only occasional hard edges.   Stu

Somehow you managed the softness of the clouds & yet their heaviness!  how'd you DO that?  I like.

I am impressed by the airiness of your clouds and how you worked the gradations of colour.

Stu, it is perfectly fine to have the horizontal shapes, but you must contrast that dominant movement with a subordinate contrasting movement.  The figures in your paintings are great, they just need to be warmed up a little.  Everything else is great!!!  Anyway, just suggestions ... not written in stone.

Thanks Michael.  Of course now that it is posted, I can see my cloned shapes in the background clouds and the boring horizontal wave at the bottom.  One of the reasons that I liked two of Richard's reference photos (#2 and #4) was because of the horizontal foreground shapes as well as the story in the figures.  I will rework some of this with your suggestions in mind.   I see also that I have cloned my dark clouds at the top right; probably a breakup of the shapes with some blue sky may help.   Stu
