this was painted from a friend's photo - i moved the adirondack chairs from the right to the left to create better balance -- I could use some suggestions on how to improve this - I feel i'm missing something, especially in the foreground..

Hi Lori.  I think you did quite well from your friends photo.  Not an easy thing to do!!!   Lori ...I don't think you should be to concerned about the drawing of the barn ..it is not making or breaking the painting.  What is needed here is for your elements to be more unified ...you have green grass, red barn, blue mountains, and pink sky ....all these colors should find there way around the painting .. This is an overcast light, I would paint the lights cool and the shadows warm.  I would suggest that you shift your grass to a more cooler green.  Make sure you gradate that grass leading us into the painting ....a little darker at the bottom and lighter as you go back.  Anyway, see if you can unify your painting a little more, then I think you will have it!! :))

Roena I didn't notice that that part of the building came forward!! Good eye!! Thank you for the tip:)) I do have a lot of correcting to do!!! Not sure if I should just wipe the whole thing off .. I hunk I will try wiping the parts I messed up and see what happens. Certainly can't leave it this way!

Lori there is a trick to use so you know where the roof of a building goes.  Which in this case could also help you center your door.  This is most helpful when you have a building on a angle.  First make a box out of the side of the wall in question (I did this by just drawing one line for the top of the box and used the white lines you  had painted on the edge of that wall).  Then draw a X in the box.........the roof point goes where the center of the X is.

Also, it appears to me that the part of the building that comes forward for the door is painted correctly on the right as the larger part of the barn is "back" some,  However, you missed this on the left and did not paint it to appear back behind the door wall.  When you look closely at the roof line on the left, you will see the edge of the front part - roof line - going back.  Perhaps blow the image up much larger to see that indication.  Hugs, Roena

wow...i had been working from a photoshopped copy of my source and see how much I lost! note to self - always have the original available..I will do a lot of adjusting based on this!

Ah ha!! Lawrence you were right about the apex though...the opening is large but I misjudged the center and have painted it off.. Oops. Doubt I can adjust that now without a total scrape off of the front of the barn..but maybe I should? FYI. He source photo is on my page of photos in a value study post..I'm trying to find my original source to have a better look.
