Lori, I love how you presented your progression. Great job on the painting. As far as the background is concerned, maybe if you lightened its value a bit, the blue cube would come forward. I had the same problem with one and lightened a portion. It did help. Great job on these. :-)

Makes sense Michael ..I really appreciate your input in this, it's a great help!! I'd asked re temperature in the general discussion but lost the thought when I got into the painting. I just had a thought of Sargent looking, looking, looking..then dashing across the room to put on a dab of paint..back to looking again!! I get too caught up in the moment.
The bird houses sound terrific!!! Can't wait to see how they turn out as paintings! Those craft stores sell all kinds of fun stuff. I suppose you've told your wife what a terrific idea she had bringing there?!!! Lol

Lori, on your orange blocks shadow plane side, try using a warmer green (closer to the orange on the wheel) instead of blue.  The warm green has yellow in it and blue which will ..I think ...relate a little better to the orange? ...anyway, give that a try..just make sure it is the same value.   My wife dragged me into Jo Ann Fabric store yesterday and they had a bin full of  block size ...bird houses!! ....not painted!! ...IDEA ..I scooped up 6 of them to use as my block studies!!  They were only $1.50 each ...good deal.  Can you see the learning possibilities of using the bird houses? I think I will get some more.

Not bad Lori.  Maybe a little too cool on the orange cube light side and way to light ...try keeping it warm by putting some yellows into the white.  The shadow side of the orange block is fine.    ..  The blue block:  It is very difficult to represent a warm light by using a cold color.  The side of the blue cube getting direct light should be represented by a warm color for the first note.  You see, this is your brain saying a blue block ...never mind what the light is doing to it, it makes you see blue.   express what the light is doing to that side of the block ..warming it ...you could begin that side of the block with alizirin Crimson + white.....then over that, your broken color would be a slightly warm blue of the same value.  Now you have used broken color to depict a blue blocks side that is being hit by warm light!!!  With the light side painted accurately, the other sides can be easily judged against it.  When I painted my green block, I did not start with green for the top sunlit plane, I started with a warm yellow ..over that, I painted  my green as a broken color over the yellow.  I am now expressing the light AND the local color.
