workshop 31 orange block1

this is my first attempt at the broken color exercise..I started with an orange block - noticed the block's face appeared more yellow in the photo than in life. I added red, then green, then blue-green..the bg got muddy as did the reflection. Lessons learned:
1. keep a mix of the original color on the palette for when mixing new values - should have watched the video in it's entirety first!!
2. SLOW DOWN
3, clean that brush & LOAD it with paint for wet in wet!!

No, I snapped a photo and continued to the broken color - and obviously without enough thought as to the color wheel. I was hearing Richards voice on my IPAD and just chose the colors he chose - as he said in the video "auto pilot" - except I wasn't doing the driving!!!

I paint late at night and should have stopped after the first painting. Lesson #4!

I set up two new blocks and will give them a try with more care to the colors

Comment by Michael J. Severin on April 9, 2014 at 1:41: Lori, are these 2 separate paintings of the cube, or is the second block with the addition of broken color added? The values on your first block are so right on!!!!! Your applied broken color notes were to dark in value ...but I realize you already know that. I am curious as to why you went around the cool side of the wheel instead of going the other way? On the light side of the cube, I think maybe notes of warm yellow and notes of yellow/green (all of the same value) would have worked to enhance your light side ...maybe a 3rd note consisting of a warm pink? ...just making a guess on that one. The other 2 sides would then be painted in relation to the notes you put on the light side. From orange to blue/green is too far away from each other ..hence .mud. A green/blue is a little closer ..that might work ...it is difficult to say without actually comparing.
