oil on canvas panel 11" by 14"--this is "2 value" underpainting for Workshop 9 from Johannes Vloothuis photo reference set (IMG_3136.JPG). I used an expanded limited palette with Galkyd lite medium with titanium white, pale yellow ochre, transparent earth red, indian red, ultramarine blue and viridian (all colors from Gamblin, except pale yellow ochre from Winsor-Newton). Same palette will be used for final painting.

Thank you Richard for boyh the compliments and the tip about my cloned bushes; three layers later and I am ready to put on my finishing touches. I have lightened my shadows and painted the two bushes in slightly different hues, but I will take a much closer look at it before submitting the final painting. I posted each step at the request of Ruby along with my palette and what I did in each layer and actually that thought process was helpful to me also. Stu

Nicely done Stu. Those shadows are looking quite black - I would expect a slightly lighter value and a little more colour in there from reflected light, but again, photos of high contrast scenes like this tend to overstate the darks and lights. I like the composition a lot and the opportunity for 4 layers of distance. Beware those two foreground bushes looking too similar in size and placement  - like the're being mirrored. I would personally extend that bush on the left.

Hi Stu

I am saving this  study to examine closely.  It is great for me to see you  using just 2 values,   but several different hues!  That is what I must learn..........thank you and  Smiles to you,  dor:))

This is from JVs photo reference set and palette is his muted landscape palette except I use transparent earth red instead of burnt sienna (it's more transparent).  Stu

I agree with Ruby.  This looks amazing.  Can't wait to see the final.

FYI: I am sitting out a few months.  I have some big projects in the works.
