Thanks Ann for the comment on my gallery/me photo.  Our daughter was taking the photos and kept after me to get me to "smile".  It was a fun evening at the gallery opening.

Thank you Ann :)

I actually kind of/sort of know Michael. I participated in the San Luis Obispo Plein Air event a few years back, and he did also. In addition we were in the same gallery in Carmel for a couple of years... but we wouldn't know each other if we bumped into one another on the streets - Ha!

I'm looking forward to spending a little time tomorrow on the site looking at everyone's work :)

Thank you so much for the friend invite, Ann. Very pleased to be painting buddies along this journey. (I have another "technique" for your lefty. I'm working on a 24x20" canvas at the moment, and just realized another thing I do to accommodate myself. Instead of resting on the easel, the canvas is on a slant-board on an elevated tilt of about 6-8 inches. Allows me more freedom and control for lines vertical and horizontal...and, my hand obstructs my view less. I've realized I peek around the brush sort of and in the process tilt it. So,  the discover continues.

Hi again Ann. Thinking about your "lefty" student as I paint. Here is another thing I do that might help her out. You talked about her "left directed swoop" If I'm having difficulty placing a directional line or movement, I turn the canvas upside down to accomplish it (with a pastel pencil drawing to follow) I'm also known to turn it sideways, easier to pull down rather than push up when symmetry is important. And as I mentioned, the mahl stick. I don't work nor have any desire to work in hyper-realism now, but when I did, I incorporated the "Artist Bridge" at times that I used in my calligraphy. Hope this helps a bit in the quest to find her own way of working.

Hi Ann, nice to meet you as well. Thank you for your comments. Black is the mother color of them all. Iv'e read this many times over the years and have become a believer. When added along side to any and all other colors black alone best brings out the depth in the surrounding colors. I love using it and over the years have tried them all. Artist Richard Schmid book, Alla Prima, taught me so much about color theory. Until then I worked with the commercial blacks. His book taught me how to mix my own black by mixing, 50% ultramarine blue, 25 -35 % transparent oxide red and a touch of  permanent alizarin crimson. This mixture makes the most beautiful grays. By veering the amounts of blue and red you can mix a warm or cool blacks. Theres a new black out by W&N, blue black. As you can guess it is a cool black. Of the commercial  blacks I  like Mars black. I take all my tube color families " all my reds" for example and make a 5x7 in card say of matt board material. I dab each color across the top. I then mix each with a percentage of titanium white below each color. In the case of black you'll see right away how each one will perform in your painting. Doing this with all of my colors have taught me witch ones I  needed to use in the present painting. Best I can do to help. ken

Hi Ann, thank you for the encouraging comments on the Bay city piece, my main medium is watercolor (easy clean-up, lazy guy), with a lot of green a touch of red always brightens things up :-)   Greens look better when mixed  but there's nothing wrong with from a tube and I use both.

Hi Ann,

thank you for viewing my rendition of the Charles Bridge. Most of the photographs sold on the bridge were taken at dusk with the statues silhouetted against the sky, I bought one as I had no camera with me (quick business trip).  It's all in the eye of the beholder, I felt it showed the bridge in a romantic setting :-) Cheers
