I did some studies today on this teddy bear trying to capture the essence of sunlight working with red. Your thoughts? The red was really difficult to get right and still is not right. :( I need some advise please!

Outstanding! You certainly captured the light Aurelia! And the broken color in your shadow is gorgeous..I admire your crisp, clean brushwork

Thanks Michael. Yes I remember something like that. If you can feel the heat in this painting, then I have accomplish my goal! I am studing some of Sorolla's paintings. He was really good at painting sunlight. Thanks again for taking the time to crit my teddy bear!

Aurelia, you used the warm side of the wheel for the red in sunlight, and cool side for the red in shadow .. you nailed that real well.  About your concern for the value ...  it looks fine to me, but you were there observing the relationships, so I really have nothing to go by.  Remember in one of the VA lessons, Barry gives a few examples of block studies in the sunlight.  He did mention something about having to introduce both the sunlight color ..which you have done ... AND .. the sky reflection color ... do you remember that lesson? not quite sure what lesson it was?

Thank you so much for your comments. I find that the red in sunlight is a high saturation, but high value as well and I just cannot get that colour. But I think your idea with the broken colour might do the trick although I did use Permant Rose and Alizarin Crimzon in the shadow and Cad Light Red mixing with Cad Yellow in the light area, but as soon as I mixed it with white it lower the saturation too much. Maybe I should rather focus on the value rather than the saturation. I am doing an article on "painting Sunlight" and it has to be perfect - my colour, form and value. I'll do another one tomorow. Thank you for your help.

Hey Aurelia,  You might be thinking the red shadow plane is too warm? .... if you are, then consider putting in some cool notes using Permanent Rose or Magenta?? .....  broken color style.

Hi Aurelia, I don't see anything amiss! ...  you have captured the illusion of light and shadow very well!!!!  I really, really love your use of half tones between the light and shadow instead of blending ..wow, that is good!!  Anyway, the red ... let's see ... the red in the sunlight is being hit by the color of the light ..and you painted it that way ...nothing wrong with that.   The red in shadow .... it would be mostly a red/violet ... and that is what it looks like you used? .... nothing wrong with that ..... very nice temperature changes within the cast shadow on the ground!!  You have kept the continuity of the light by your consistent values and colors saturation's in both light and shadow .. all good.  What is troubling you about this wonderful study of light???
