You have inspired me to have a go at changing the sky etc in my painting Michael! I shall start tomorrow and if I feel extra brave I shall dull down the front figure too! Wish me luck!

Oh, BTW ...do not go half and half with the umbrella ...1/4 light ...3/4 half tone ...(the tone you have now).

Hi Sarah.  your yellow umbrella is the correct tone in shadow, so when you punch a highlight on the left side of the umbrella, it will pop!!!  Okay, the sky.  We are looking more or less INTO THE SUN ..therefore ..the sky should be quite bright and warm ...you can use a prismatic approach ...white, yellow, red, and blue ...with the yellow +white predominating. ...use a lot of white  Then punch that yellow/white in a heavy impasto stroke on the street coming toward you ..if it is too intense, then kind of nudge some of your gray street color into its edges.  When you put the rim light (highlights) on the figures and umbrella ..your painting will sparkle!!!  I like your background information ...don't mess with that.  :))

Michael, thank you so much for taking the time to explain certain points. I had noticed the yellow umbrella did not have much shadow on one side of it once I had uploaded it and I remember wondering whether I should dull the front figure down a bit but wasn't brave enough to do so :( the shadow information was very helpful and I shall remember that advise on further paintings. I did think that my sky was light enough. Can you tell me what mix of colour you would use? (I thought maybe ultramarine, alizarin and lots of white!,,,,).
Thanks for all that good advice! It's the only way to learn more.
