Thanks Jessica, I had desaturated the photo, mid way through, when all the greens were looking the same to me.  Thanks for the tip on doing it to the little study though, I will do that!  Michael, I' ll pick up the other black and try again.

It's a lovely scene, Candi - one thing I do often is to put the photo into greyscale or black & white; then you can see the values much more easily.  You can also take a photo of your painting when you're finished & put that into black & white to see how accurately you've got the values.

Squint Candi, and you will see that the green shapes are middle value ... not light.  

The upright sections of wall that are in the light are a darker value then the flat plane of the courtyard and top of the wall.  Note the warm reflected light in the shadow on the wall.
