I'm working on trying to compress values for a lesson in virtual art academy - I'm supposed to be limiting the number of shapes - having a tough time!
At any rate, the first is my favorite subject - (you guessed it, my husband Mike--just celebrate 32 years:)) and the second is a photo a friend took in Vermont. I'd like to paint both.

Thanks Silke - It's taken me more than a year to get to this lesson!! Keep plugging!

Michael, thanks for your advice - that's exactly what I need to do! While I see "darker values there, they're really not that much darker than the dark gray & should be compressed (if that's the right word?)

I do like the 4 value of Mike:) can't wait to paint it!

Hi Lori.  I like the 4 value notan of your Husband.   The 4 value of the Vermont photo:  Those dark shapes coming from the lower right ...leave those out of your 4 value notan study ...

Hard lesson! But I think you did well :-) I am actually a bit lazy at the academy ;-)
