Painting Roses and Flowers

I began to paint roses and some flowers this month for the first time in oils. They are truly fun but I prefer landscape painting over them. These were done from some of my own roses and they are called "Double Delight". I did them from photographs I took a few years ago.

What was different in doing these, was the supports I used. I made my own from masonite, and then primed them with Gamblin's oil ground instead of water based gesso. I added texture as well specifically to…

Recent portrait commission

I recently finished a portrait commissioned by a groom as a wedding present for his bride..her dad passed away when she was only four years old..the portrait was of her father. It was grueling because of the poor quality of reference photos..obviously, no digital photos..only faded Polaroids and a dis colored wedding album to go by....not to mention the pressure as this was such a sentimental gift!

Many, many attempts scratched and daily prayers to find the way to make this happen…

Richard's Post on Motivation and the Purpose of Painting

Richard,

I am new to your site.  I wanted to compliment you on the email to sent out today on motivation and the purpose of painting.  It was insightful and written from the heart, something that is hard to do.

Thanks for all that you are doing to promote painting and help others learn.

Looking forward to leaning more about you and your style of painting.

Peace

Finishing Monet's Painting

I'm very happy to release this month's new online workshop and demo video at http://www.livepaintinglessons.com/workshop41.php

This has taken quite some study and I found it exciting to follow Monet's footsteps through Venice (virtually), discovering the history there and to be…

A studio painting step by step

Resource Photo: Pataua South, Northland, New Zealand

I've painted this scene several times before, all with slight variations on a theme. This one is a commission for a specific size so needed to be compressed into the shorter format. Each time I…

Latest watercolour need help!

This painting turned out very different to what I had in my head. I am not sure about it.  Has any one any ideas on how to improve it? I may even cut it to a different size yet. Thanks

The photo does not really show the colours correctly but you get the drift.

Cheers and blessings

An older painting reworked

Hi all, I have reworked an old painting(2011 ) of this church in Glen Innes . I would love feedback as to wether it works better or not. I wanted to reuse the frame and was going to discard the painting to the pile (you know one of those 'cannot seem to throw it out but hope it gets better with age' piles) so I thought I might play with it. Please let me know of your thoughts. I need to work on my photography skills but you get the picture.

Cheers and much blessing

Winter in Michigan

//////Composition #5 is entitled country Kid. I love the feeling of warmth in the photo. The young child grasps the chicken with her chubby hands. I would want to capture this feeling of warmth. I've decided not to use the normal, let's say, usual composition but to position the child on the far left of the picture plane in order to make the chicken the center of attention. I'm doing a mosaic using parts of other paintings. (watercolor). I'll show you when I get done!

Gloves for Artists (protection against paint)

We all have used the Latex gloves to protect our hands from the toxic paints.  I know Richard Robinson also does.  But the problem with Latex gloves is that it makes your hand sweaty and prune-y.  So a very good alternative is a gardeners glove that I have been using for a year or so (shown below).  The front has rubber/vinyl like material (which is thin) and the back is cloth and helps the hand breath and your hand will not be sweaty at all, no matter how hot.  The rubber part covers the…

Winter in Michigan

My third photo is from the desert with a beautiful multi-armed Saguaro as the focus point. At first I saw again the cross formula with the cactus as the perpendicular and the rocks as the longitudinal. Also the middle rock leads me to another formula called the balance-scale formula where you have a dominant center of interest with similar masses and shapes distributed somewhat equally on both sides. And then I saw the diagonal formula and I could see the lines very plainly.!
