I think when an artist posts their ... whole ... portfolio at one time, it becomes quite overwhelming and I tend to just pass over them.

Hi, Gerald! Well done for replying/explianing. The site interface is pretty simple - you'll soon work it out. The main activities are centered around Richard's monthly workshops. The photo/gallery is just people showing their work/what they are up - mostly to encourage one aother and maybe give some suggestions - not normally in-depth critiques - we mostly need encouragement, I guess!!!!

I personally like your work/style a lot - a very nice approach,

and I too am in the situation:

"... don't sell them or exhibit them.

I just love to paint !

Sometimes I give paintings away"

So, best wishes to you and keep trucking! Cheers. Jon

Ann Turner sent me a note. It said, in part,

It is a bit overwhelming to post so many paintings at once. We get fatigued when there are more than 1or 2 posted together.

I replied:

I must have missed the place where how this site works is explained.

I just jumped in and tried to swim.

Thank you for your tactful way of letting me know how and how not to post photos of my work.

I guess I went overboard.

I live alone and I don't show my paintings to anyone apart from a few friends.

I don't sell them or exhibit them.

I just love to paint !

Sometimes I give paintings away or donate them to a store run by a local charity.

Folks here have been so encouraging!

When I open my email, I see comments from folks.

Sometimes there is a link that allows me to respond.

Sometimes there isn't.

So I am concerned that people might feel slighted.

May I ask you, do you think members are reluctant to make more in depth comments than that they like a painting?

Is there vigorous and supportive critiquing happening?

Perhaps I haven't found the place on the site where that goes on.

Again, I am very grateful that you bothered to set me straight about posting too much at once.

I've looked at some of your paintings, too. You might have noticed that I don't show landscapes. I find them to be very challenging. So you can understand how much I appreciate what you've done !

Gerald

I'm posting this here because I don't know if I initially sent it to the right place.

Why am I having such a difficult time with this interface ?

I agree, pass over for the most part. Probably just a misunderstanding about what this site is all about though,  Perhaps a nice note on one of their postings would help, or notes added to Guidelines.

Also important that the put up their picture as well and then go to the forum and put something about themselves.   They will have plenty of opportunity to post their paintings if they stick with it.   I am sure that most of us who have been on this site for awhile have plenty of paintings that we have never posted (about 7 years for me, and I have loads of unposted paintings)!!!

Yep, I agree, I don't see the reasoning behind it - for new-comers it would also be nice if they sort of said what their goals are a little....

Michael, I agree with you.  I pass over all the work as well.  My message to other artists on this site is: "If you want your work taken seriously by the other artists on this site, please just post one to three works at a time so that the rest of us can spend some time looking at your work!"
