I have just got home from viewing Turner's art exhibition in the Adelaide Art Gallery here in South Australia. WOW is all I can say. Some are very, very large while others are quite small. Some are in watercolour, pen & ink, oils etc. Some are very tiny details with the overall painting done in large colour area's. I have been doing dog portraits. I am doing them from photograph. This one, the person wants the chair to be the same color it is, but it is woven cloth and a few colors combined. I don't want it to overpower the dog with the design in the chair. I am thinking to leave it as it is, or to make the swirls an off-white. Also, the background color I am having trouble with. I know I should incorporate some chair color into the dog's shadows? to harmonize? But darker? Hence, warm dog, cool…

'Diane at Waipu Cove' 12x16" Oil on Canvas by Richard Robinson
Painted this a few days ago for Diane whom I posed under the red umbrella. Another beautiful summer's day at Waipu Cove with the kids playing in the background, and Diane attempting her second ever grown-up drawing (while trying not to move too much).

Looking round at all the lovely art I find myself feeling a bit discouraged until I realise (again) that we each bring something unique and different to the table.
The late Margaret Olley (one of Australia's great artists) said that she always tried to put the right kind of feeling into her paintings (me paraphrasing here) i.e. feeling happy, peaceful, etc. That's an admirable quality and her paintings certainly have a wonderful peaceful feeling about them. Very comforting. That…
