Richard, this is a wow picture!  The colours are stunning;  may we know what your palette was?

Happy New Year!

I did this at my buddy Rubino's place.    I came over to study this skull for a self portrait painting I'm working on.  It was a fun study and a great way to wrap up the end of the year.  Happy New Year everybody!

Christmas wishes

Hi everyone

I just popped by to wish you all a wonderful Christmas and the very best New Year.  I hope you have good health, happiness and the very best of friendships.

For myself 2011 is already shaping up to be a very good year especially with an artists residency in the South Island which I will take up early in May.

Warmest regards

Lorna

Drawing

For those of you that might be a little intimidated by nice work, .....remember that we all did a bunch of crap....lol (i still do) If an artist acts superior....IGNORE THEM.....they are not worth your time. Art is a little piece of us that escapes into the world.

Something I used to do a lot is buy a box of 10-reams typing paper on sale. I would tear open a ream and sit and do thumbnail sketches for…

Using Browsers and Technical issues here.

When I first got here, I couldn't upload any pictures. I have a Mac, running the latest.

I was using Firefox and almost gave up. Then I switched to Safari, and that did the trick. They make Safari for PC's I believe so it may help others here with similar issues.…

Family Portraits Painting Road Trip - November 2010

This is my aunt Zefe. 11"x14" Burnt Sienna and Ultramarine.

I took Richards advice and used Burnt Sienna and Ultramarine Blue for this study. I believe this is considered "duotone" vs "monochrome". Still strongly value…

Re: Viewing and encouragement

Having settled into Richard's wonderful site; may I make a suggestion? As many on this site are here to begin their path as an artist, perhaps those of us that have started to walk that path, could ENCOURAGE others, by not just viewing all the wonderful art to be seen, but to make a COMMENT of encouragement on their artwork.

I would hope that comments are tactful and helpful. I'm sure a "Thank you" in return, would at least let people know you have received their…

wet on wet

After looking at everyones lovely wet on wet landscapes i decided to try it out for myself. Normally i work with very thin layers of wet over dry and slowly build up my paintings finishing off with glazes. Also, normally i work with a limited palate, but everyone here works with a lot of amazing colour.

what can i say, wet on wet, and an "unlimited" palate are very challenging. I found my colours getting muddy quickly. However i do really like the loose impressionistic outcome i have.… Continue
